In a world where the sky is not the limit but the starting point, women in aviation are breaking barriers and charting new paths for young girls to follow. As part of the "Finding Your Inspiration Series," in partnership with Inspiring Girls, I had the privilege of moderating a discussion with three extraordinary women: Captain Zoya Agarwal, Kim Alberts-Hild, and Bianca Marrier. Each of these women has redefined what it means to be a leader in aviation, bringing inspiration, strength, and hope to girls everywhere.
Captain Zoya Agarwal – Soaring to New Heights
Captain Zoya Agarwal is not only a commercial pilot at Air India but also a trailblazer in the world of aviation. In 2021, she led an all-female crew on Air India’s longest commercial flight, spanning the North Pole—a feat that highlighted her exceptional skills and courage. Captain Agarwal has been an outspoken advocate for women’s empowerment, emphasizing that gender should never be a limitation in the pursuit of one's dreams. She uses her platform to inspire young girls, reminding them that no dream is too high to achieve.
Her message to aspiring aviators is clear: believe in yourself, and don’t let societal expectations confine your ambitions. Captain Agarwal’s story resonates deeply with girls who aspire to break into male-dominated fields, showing them that their place is not only in the cockpit but anywhere they choose to be.
Kim Alberts-Hild – Navigating Leadership and Legacy
Ms. Kim Alberts-Hild is a retired Boeing executive and the author of several insightful works on aviation and leadership. Her career at Boeing, one of the world’s leading aerospace companies, saw her take on roles that were once dominated by men. Alberts-Hild became a key figure in shaping company strategy and mentoring the next generation of aviation professionals. Her journey through corporate aviation management offers an inspiring example of resilience, leadership, and the importance of representation.
In her retirement, Alberts-Hild continues to write and mentor, offering guidance to young women eager to enter the aviation industry. She encourages them to stay curious, embrace challenges, and never stop learning—traits that have carried her through her illustrious career. Her presence in this discussion served as a reminder that leadership is not just about breaking through glass ceilings, but about leaving a legacy for others to follow.
Bianca Marrier – Grounding Dreams in Practicality
Ms. Bianca Marrier, an A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) mechanic at Beta Technologies and mentor at Habitat for Aviation, brings a unique perspective to the aviation industry. Often working behind the scenes, Marrier plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and functionality of aircraft. Her career path, though unconventional for many women, is proof that passion and skill know no bounds.
As a mentor, Marrier’s work at Habitat for Aviation helps introduce girls to the mechanical and engineering aspects of aviation, areas often overlooked by women. Her hands-on approach to education breaks down barriers and invites girls to explore fields that require not only intelligence but also perseverance and creativity. Her dedication shows young women that working on aircraft is not just a job, but a passion.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Through their individual journeys, Captain Zoya Agarwal, Kim Alberts-Hild, and Bianca Marrier exemplify how women can conquer every aspect of the aviation industry—whether in the cockpit, the boardroom, or behind the scenes. Their stories speak to young girls with dreams of the skies, encouraging them to find their inspiration, persevere, and realize their potential.
The "Finding Your Inspiration Series," in partnership with Inspiring Girls, is more than just a conversation—it's a movement. By providing young girls with access to female role models in aviation, we aim to inspire the next generation to see the sky as a place of limitless opportunity. These women prove that the aviation industry is ready to be shaped by new perspectives and that there is no limit to where their inspiration can take them.
